Time & Tide: The Islands of Tuvalu
by: Tony Wheeler, Peter Bennetts
Tuvalu is a Pacific nation of low lying coral atolls and islands whose existence is threatened by climate change and rising sea levels. This large format, softcover, full-colour photographic essay will show the world what will surely be lost as sea levels rise: a unique culture and environment irrevocably erased. This moody and evocative portrait of the tiny island nation is a foray into previously undocumented territory – it is the kind of venture Lonely Planet has pioneered. Photographed by Peter Bennetts with text and interviews by Tony Wheeler, Time & Tide is a serenely beautiful and poignant story of our times.

Tuvalu
Tuvalu is a small island nation in the Pacific, at an elevation of only 15 feet, rising sea levels are a serious threat. BYU-Hawaii SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) students traveled there to help to train the youth, as they will be the leaders of tomorrow.
Tuvalu (HUNGRY BEAST)
The effects of rising sea levels due to global warming seem a long way off for most of us, but for the people of the small Pacific island nation of Tuvalu, the threat is more imminent. With water now up to some families' doorsteps during king tides and a higher water table interfering with food production, time is fast running out for the population of Tuvalu.
Tuvalu
A modern fairy tale that combines a love story and characters who barely speak, but act. The setting is inside a building housing a great, old pool that is falling apart. Anton, the young apprentice to his father, the master of the baths, is the lead character who grows up during the course of the story. His time is devoted to convincing his blind father that the pool is intact and full of customers. Anton is an eccentric loner who dreams of the open seas. Similar desires are shared by Eva, a beautiful eighteen year old whose eye is caught by Anton's strange ways. A grave misunderstanding keeps the two of them from setting off in Eva's tug boat right at the beginning: Eva's father is killed when he's struck by a piece of the pool's ceiling. This misunderstanding is set into motion by Gregor, Anton's older, jealous brother, for whom the baths and the pool are a thorn in his plans. Gregor wants to destroy the building and entire town to replace it with a futuristic mall. No price is too high, no means too cruel. However, when his plans are botched, he turns against his father and brother.
Tuvalu's drought woes continue
The Prime Minister of Tuvalu is pleading for international help as the tiny Pacific Island nation deals with a crippling drought. Each household in the island have to survive on two buckets of fresh water, forty litres a day. Drinking water is now being provided by desalination plants. The amount of clean water being produced has doubled after New Zealand sent over a portable desalination unit. Two years ago the United Nations set up a multi billion dollar fund to help small countries deal with problems associated with climate change and rising sea levels. The Tuvalu government is now trying to access these funds to help find a long term solution to the water crisis. So far there are no outbreak of disease, but the international Red Cross is concerned that may not last. Weather forecasters are not predicting rain until January. While the efforts of New Zealand government along with aid from Australia and the US is helping boost water reserves, the international help is only due to last for another month. Al Jazeera's Belinda Henley reports from Tuvalu.
